Montcalm County's new public defender still doesn't have an official office - Greenville Daily News

Montcalm County Public Defender Matt Nave, at right, explains details of the county’s new indigent defense budget to Montcalm County’s Finance & Personnel Committee on Monday as Montcalm County Maintenance Director Scott Wright listens. — DN Photo Elisabeth WaldonOn Monday, Montcalm County’s Finance & Personnel Committee unanimously voted to approve the indigent defense budget and move forward with creating new office space for Public Defender Matt Nave and Administrative Assistant Sonja Rasmussen, who have been working from a makeshift office in the main corridor of the courthouse. The creation of the office of public defender was done to comply with new Michigan standards to theoretically provide better legal defense to poor people accused of a crime (all eight standards proposed by the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission can be read at michiganidc.gov online).Nave’s new office will be located in the Montcalm County Court Complex in what is currently a lobby next to a wall of windows near District Court.
